This is a new red developed for the 2024 vintage intended to harness the cola-y and red fruit character of Cab Franc and Chambourcin in a more-juicy-than-oaked Bordeaux-adjacent blend. We thought earthy, spicy, resinous native birch made a quite natural namesake for this endeavor. In Bordeaux, the green pepper-y methoxypyrozines of Cab Franc are balanced out with Merlot and Cab Sauv. We used Verona to play a similar role as Merlot, introducing a round plummy and syrupy body, and used some of our Reserve Red to bring in similar bright cherry notes and depth traditionally offered by Cab Sauv.
